2022 Australian GP Results - Rins pips Marquez and Bagnaia to win Phillip Island majestic battle

PHILLIP ISLAND (Sunday) – Alex Rins defies the odds after the Suzuki rider defeats race winning favorites Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati LENOVO Team) and Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) in a dramatic 27-lap Australian motorcycle Grand Prix thriller. More dramatically, championship leader Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha) has relinqushed his championship lead to Bagnaia after the Yamaha rider crashed out mid-race.
The 2022 Australian GP race is full of thrills and dramas. Home hero Jack Miller (Ducati Team) who was in the winning contention, was collided by Alex Marquez (LCR Honda) and Maverick Vinales (Aprilia Racing). Quartararo's first mistake of the race is when he attempted to overtake Bagnaia, however the Frenchman outbraked his bike too wide and slipped to 20th place behind Fabio DiGiannantonio (Gresini Racing) and two RNF Yamaha riders Cal Crutchlow and Darryn Binder. After overtaking Binder and Crutchlow, El Diablo overtook DiGiannantonio and Tech3 KTM's Remy Gardner for scoring crucial points, however while escaping from DiGiannantonio and Gardner, Quartararo slided his #20 Yamaha into a low-side at Turn 2 and crashed out of the race while catching Pol Espargaro (Repsol Honda Team) and Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing). The Frenchman walked away unhurt with his livid mental, effectively lost his championship lead for the first time of the season to Bagnaia, who enjoyed the battle at the front with Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team), Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) and Alex Rins (Team Suzuki ECSTAR).

At the start of the final lap, Bagnaia leads Marquez and Rins, however, the #42 factory Suzuki rider overtook the #63 factory Ducati rider at turn 2. The Italian is also being overtaken by the #93 factory Honda rider at Siberia. Rins was slipstreamed by Marquez and Bagnaia, but the Suzuki rider held firm into the chequered flag to win the battle.

Rins made the biggest climb in the world championship following his win. Marquez scored another majestic milestone with his 100th career premier class podium, the Cervera Red Ant's first podium since taking his fourth surgery. A third place finish in Australia saw Bagnaia took over the lead in the world championship with title chances on his grasp with two remaining races (Malaysia and Valencia).
