What are changes for the 2023 MotoGP season?

The 2023 FIM MotoGP World Championship will bring more thrills and excitement with the addition of the new tracks (Kazakhstan and India) and the new Saturday afternoon's sprint races. And here are some of significant changes for the 2023 MotoGP season according to Dorna Sports General Manager, Carlos Ezpeleta (son of Dorna Sports CEO, Carmelo Ezpeleta).

1. Sprint races
The MotoGP sprint race is held on Saturday afternoon following the qualifying session. Unlike Formula 1 sprint races which determined grid positions, the MotoGP sprint races will not decide the grid for Sunday's race. The race distance for MotoGP sprint race will be half from regular Sunday's full race distance. Points will be awarded to the top 9 finishers on a 12–9–7–6–5–4–3–2–1 basis, similar to the system being used in Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) Superpole races. Sprint race wins are not considered as regular Grands Prix wins and instead would have their own "Sprint race wins" statistic.

2. New tracks
For the 2023 season, the FIM, Dorna, IRTA and MSMA (authoritized organizations of MotoGP and WorldSBK) officially added Kazakhstan and India into the 2023 championship calendar. The Kazakhstan GP will be held at the new circuit named Sokol International Circuit; while the Indian GP will be raced at Buddh International Circuit which previously held F1 races in 2010-2012.

3. Calendar changes
The Portuguese GP at Algarve Portimao circuit will be the season opener for the 2023 season. The Qatar GP at Losail which had been a season opening race since 2006, moved to mid-November as the season's penultimate race, due to the country's regulation to not allowing to held sports and entertainment events during traditional Ramadan fasting month which took place in late March to late April. The Indonesian GP which slated to held early April at Mandalika, is also moved to mid-October and replaced by American-leg races (Argentina and Americas GP).
