Morbidelli wins the Valencia GP as Mir becomes the new MotoGP World Champion
Joan Mir needs to finish inside top-10 to win his first MotoGP title in Valencia Grand Prix at Comunitat Valenciana Circuit Ricardo Tormo, Valencia. The Mallorcan's championship dreams came true after finishing 7th in the race, after the Suzuki rider started the race from 12th. With the achievement, Mir became the third Spaniard in the MotoGP era (since 2002) to win the premier-class world title after Jorge Lorenzo (2010) and Marc Marquez (2013). Mir also became the first Suzuki rider becoming the premier-class world champion since Kenny Roberts Jr. in 2000.
The race won by Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha SRT) who led every single lap of the race after starting the race from pole position. The Italian rider trails championship leader Mir by 29 points heading to the final race (Portuguese Grand Prix), but it was not enough for him to win his first MotoGP world title as well
Morbidelli's teammate Fabio Quartararo attempted to keep his championship title hopes alive until the final race of the season at Portimao circuit, Portugal. But the Frenchman crashed out on lap 10 and lost his hopes of winning the title.
